That’s brilliant, Andy. I wish your son the very best of luck!

Matt stayed at IBM too… until a few weeks ago!

Unlike you, I did remain for the IBM acquisition. Apart from being able to get some cash for the otherwise worthless AlphaBlox shares, the 3 years I spent at IBM were probably the most boring of my working life. Stuck behind blue tape which stifled all innovation, you would have been bored out of your mind! Now I’m back in England working for, while not a startup, a small company trying to grow at English pace rather than Silicon Valley boom and bust pace. On the other hand our eldest, having got his Computer Science degree is now about to go back to the valley and embark on a similar journey to the one we had 30 years ago.

All these years I’ve known you as a computer guy. Never knew you did such ground breaking stuff! Really cool to read Kev and I look forward to the next chapter

London, for example, had a circle drawn around it in the 1950s and they are not allowed to build outside that circle. The area outside is called the green belt.

A lot of English cities have a similar limit.

Please explain about the limits placed on the size of English cities.

You are right! When I left Dallas-Fort Worth 12 years ago, the metroplex was about 120 miles east to west and 75 miles north to south. Oppressive

Austin has an aquifer under it. So 30 years ago there was a big political battle. Now there are recharge zones, that is, creek beds and their watersheds which are protected from development. So there is maybe 30,000 acres of parkland in the City. Right downtown is a long trail along a big lake that provides escape from urban life.

But it is still not the beauty and intimacy of English countrysides and villages.

Hope you don’t mind these off-topic comments. If you do, let me know
