Even though I’ve done my share of adventure travel and love camping, nothing like yours, and certainly nothing like many Americans I know who only travel to hotels w/ top notch room service and where the women wouldn’t dream of doing anything that might result in chipping their nail polish. I’ve love reading of your astonishing travel adventures.

Looks like Thailand was a popular destination in the late 80s! Justine was there, as well as another friend who will probably be along shortly.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if our paths crossed in Koh Samui!? I has such a great time there. The Cameron Highlighs were special too, but I didn’t have much to say beyond ‘I loved it’.

My first muslim prayers woke me up in Penang when I was next door to the mosque.

What a great trip and adventure!
It is great fun to be young and able to travel in any conditions, enjoy it, and discover new people, places, customs etc!
It’s not just fun, it is also transformative… I never was as adventurous, but I did enjoy exploring new places on a shoestring.

Oh I absolutely loved reading this Kevin ! I too was there in 89 but was going the opposite way … Bangkok, Koh Samui, Penang , etc etc I wander if we ever passed at some travel hub Your description of the Cameron Highlands sums it up perfectly.. but it was also the first place I ever heard Muslims being called to prayer , we had no clue what was going on, well we were young and naive, and felt a bit scared when we heard the call as it appeared to still be night time ( it wasn’t). I concur that Raffles was cling wrapped for refurbishment in 89 but I did finally get to have my Singapore Sling and toss the peanut shells on the floor (why ) a couple of years ago. Sadly the Long Bar is just a tourist trap now … bet it wasn’t like that in the eighties, when everything was brilliant A thoroughly enjoyable read as always Kevin ( ps you were considerably more adventurous than I was, and would ever be )
