It is about self-evaluation but it’s also about being comfortable with where you are and where you are going.

Thank you, Janet! I almost didn’t post it because I wasn’t sure it was interesting enough! It also felt a little more intimate than I am comfortable with. Dancing naked in the shopping centre. No problem! Bragging about my maths A-level? Hmmmm…

And also allows me to feel pretty good about how good I was in some other areas. But it’s always been more about process for me — the pleasure or satisfaction of just hitting the ball — and almost never about a reliable product. I think I heard or read that same interview with McEnroe and thought his way of looking at life was more unpleasant than I could ever stand. Plus I couldn’t relate to his emphasis on tangible, measurable achievement when almost everything I care about in life can’t be measured.

I was the opposite! I never thought I had what it would take to be a highly accomplished anything, so didn’t aim high. I ended up in three different kinds of work in which I eventually realized that I probably could have amounted to something! But I didn’t enjoy any of them enough to stick to them for more than seven years.

What if my self evaluation is flawed?
In my early working career I thought I had skills that should be rewarded with (maybe) promotions and a higher salary. It didn’t happen.
Only much later when I looked back at that period did I realize how out of touch I was. My self evaluation was deeply flawed.
