It listens out for other Sonar systems from other ships and submarines and beeps if it detects one.

If you look at the pictures above of HMS Revenge and HMS Repulse you can see a sticky-up thing on the deck in between the the foreplanes, in front of the fin. That’s the Paris Dome. It listens for other sonars.

American sailors call their ballistic missile submarines boomers. We call ours bombers. Unfortunately, other sailors call the people who work on them Bomber Queens because they have a cushy life with steak and cheese and such.

You don’t have the cheese and steak at the same time. You have a delicious sirloin steak for dinner followed by some delicious cheese as an alternative to a dessert.

Wow, fascinating. It’s somewhat reassuring, somewhat terrifying, that when a missile is launched you don’t know if you are initiating a real attack or just a drill. It certainly tables conscience.

Thanks Kevin. A really interesting narrative which contains the sense of menace. Official secrets act seems pretty outdated. I was warned that telling anyone about my office furniture would be a breach etc etc. So I have made a practice, if I thought special branch might be in the audience, of starting lectures with the warning that from time to time I would break the act. Noone ever took any notice!
