Dennis, yes I think I remember you. I think your pit was directly across from mine in Frew 2 mess and I think I remember your disappointment at my inability to make the brass on my webbing as shiny as yours!

Even though the events narrated in this blog post happened nearly 30 years ago and even though the chances of any of my fellow apprentices from class 823 showing up on this site are close to zero i feel obliged to note for the sake of the historical record that I combined two separate memories into one story.
The long, long journey back to Torpoint and HMS Fisgard after a weekend visiting my girlfriend is real and the memory is as fresh as the day it was made. The lonely automat of my memory though, was in HMS Collingwood. The journey was less interesting – the highlight was a cup of amazingly good coffee in the MacDonalds outside Victoria Station while waiting for the 12:30 to Fareham – but the lonely, flickering, jangly automat at HMS Collingwood is the one I see when I close my eyes.
