I was riding my bike to school 1 mile away when I was in 2nd grade. The worst thing to ever happen was being stopped by some bullies who harassed me a little bit. A year later I was walking my sister to school. I am sure glad I was allowed to do that though because it lead to me being able to think and travel independently. The exploration and adventure aspect of traveling on your own is essential for developing confidence. The other alternative is enforcing in your children that the world really is as scary and dangerous as the media tells you it is, which it is not, and that no matter where they are they will need a car to get to point B ... which is one of the more dangerous places to be in comparison to everything else that could happen to them. I wouldn't know what to do. I grew up roaming the streets of Luanda and then Kinshasa all by myself, and all sorts of "bad" things happened to me. All "bad" things that were good for me, and I would want all my kids to go through the same. However, my (irrational) instinct would be to be very scared if my 9 yo would walk by herself to school. I would consider moving 5 miles from any school, so the request wouldn't come up again :) I’m so glad Morgane never brought this up. I wouldn’t know what to do.
