Web That Smut

Posted on October 30th, 2009

Back in the old days, we used to play a game on the internet called “web that smut”.

The basic idea was that you’d pick a page – say, the home page of Nike – and your opponent would say “I can web that smut in 12″ . Then you’d bid down in the manner of “Name That Tune”.

  • I can web that smut in 11
  • I can web that smut in 8
  • Web that Smut!!

The challengee would then be obliged to – just by clicking, no typing – get from the Nike home page to a porn site in 8 clicks. The basic strategy was that if you could get to the yahoo home page it was Society ->People and Places -> Sexuality -> Magazines then you were looking at naked bodies.

It was pretty easy in the old days because every page had a list of “Links” and everyone linked to Yahoo. It’s harder now because no-one wants to link to Other Sites.

But now there is We Heart It and clicking to porn is a feasible activity again and I hereby challenge you.

I can web that smut in 12:

Walk to School?

Posted on October 13th, 2009

We live less than 1/2 a mile and two tiny streets away from the 9 year old’s school and she asked if it would be OK for her to walk to school on her own. I asked The Google what is the current thinking on 9 year olds walking to school? and was shocked by what it told me.

I expected to find mixed opinions – a few people fondly remembering how they walked a couple of miles across a field when they were five; some others wondering whether it may be too dangerous in this day and age; a pragmatic smattering suggesting that it depend on the maturity of your child but…nope. The People on the Internet were unamimous.

IF YOU LET A NINE YEAR WALK TO SCHOOL SHE WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY BE MURDERED AND IT WILL BE ALL YOUR FAULT YOU HEARTLESS BASTARD!!! PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULD BE LOCKED UP!!!

Bloggers Paradox

Posted on October 13th, 2009

When I haven’t blogged for a while I get a pent up desire to blog something of significance. The more thought I put into that significant blog the less likely I am to actually write it. Which makes me less likely to blog for a while.

Blogs that I have not written in the last couple of weeks:

  • My evolving political worldview
  • My time on a nuclear submarine
  • Who are conservatives?
  • Some kind of analogy between local maxima in evolution and local maxima in political systems (like democracy, capitalism)
  • (related to previous) zero-tolerance of knives/fighting/etc in schools

It’s a shame. They would’ve been excellent. Ask me about them over beer.
