Government Control of Appetites

According to this essay in conservative journal, The National Revew,

“If everyone were in control of his appetites, there would be no need for the government to be involved in endorsing some sexual relationships while withholding endorsement from others.”

in other words,

The conservative case against redefining marriage is based on the observation of human vulnerability to temptation. Haggard confirms what we’ve said all along. It is pervasive moral weakness that makes such things necessary.

  1. What I find most interesting about the gay marriage debate is that it follows exactly the pattern of any other civil rights issue we have had in America. Blacks being free, blacks voting, women voting, etc… Every time one of these issues crop up, the conservative party tries to fight it and in the end look like assholes, embarrassing our country in the process.

I believe the economic government is afraid that if this becomes legal, people who have not the facilities or desire to be married will turn around and “marry” their best friend for economic advantage. I can see that as a concern, however it at the same time brings something to light. Without evidence to back this up, I will claim that rich people are more likely to be married than poor people so the institution of marriage for economic purposes really does tend to cater to the rich. If I had my way, marriage would have absolutely no economic advantage as far as the government was concerned, and you could marry whoever you wanted to. Who knows, maybe this would even strengthen the “family” that the conservatives are trying to shoehorn into our lives.

I believe you are suffering from selection bias – you are only considering the issues that the conservatives were unable to prevent. I for one am glad that marriages to kitchen appliances are still illegal.

Well… kitchen appliances of course! I mean, that would be an abomination to the sanctity of a union between two animals!
